Regulations for Nuclear Waste Transport

There are two bodies responsible for setting regulations on the transport of nuclear waste: the Nuclear Regulatory Committee (NRC) and the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Nuclear Regulatory Committee

The NRC establishes regulations for the design and manufacture of containers for nuclear spent materials. They also are responsible for the establishment of protection requirements to ensure that no waste shipment is sabotaged.5

NRC regulations for the transport of nuclear spent fuel and high-level waste are found in Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) in parts 71 and 73.6

Department of Transportation

The DOT is in charge of making requirements for the selection of transportation routes, as well as loading, unloading, and the transportation of shipments. The DOT also regulates the safety requirements for transportation vehicles.
