New treatment for nitrification/denitrification:
Chemical company BASF recently created a new single-step wastewater treatment tank. Normally wastewater must be nitrified in an aerobic tank and denitrified in a separate anaerobic tank. Instead, this new method treats water in a single tank but simply switches between the two conditions. Single tank treatment means that wastewater plants do not have to invest in separate tanks for nitrification and denitrification making treatment cheaper and more efficient. More

Bioretention Cells:
Orangeburg County Industrial Park in South Carolina has recently implemented a technique called "bioretention cells" to aid in remediating nitrate from storm runoff. These cells consist of beds of organic matter, such as mulch, and plants through which runoff flows. The organic matter serves as a carbon source to provide the anaerobic conditions necessary for denitrification. Plants also absorb some of the excess nitrate. More
