Applications of Hydrogen

 

 

After the gas is produced, transported, and stored, its power must be harnessed. Optimizing hydrogen power use represents a major challenge to the realization of a hydrogen economy. There are two major methods of converting hydrogen gas to a utilizable power, fuel cells and hydrogen combustion.

Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert chemical energy directly to electrical energy, resulting in high-efficiency power generation with low environmental impact. Of the various fuels available to power fuel cells, hydrogen is the most promising.

Hydrogen can be combusted to produce energy. However, major challenges to hydrogen combustion as an energy source are getting high quality energy and reducing or eliminating NOx production. Because of its high burning temperature, hydrogen combustion in a conventional engine would produce very high levels of NOx.
