Two primary reasons suggest that the era of fossil fuels is coming towards an end. The first and perhaps most convincing one is the problem of supply. If Hubbert’s peak does prove to be correct in estimating the world’s oil production, then it is very likely that we are already beginning to see the peak of world oil production. As world population increases and developing countries continue to modernize, a decreasing world oil production trend would spell terrible news for energy production in every corner of the globe. The second reason why we might be coming towards the final days of fossil fuel consumption is the mounting scientific evidence that our current methods of energy production and consumption are dramatically altering our environment, in ways that can have apocalyptic effects in the near future.
