to the Byzantine Era |
| Intended
for students at all levels beyond that of the textbooks, the
course will expose students to a variety of prose genres characteristic
of the post-Classical period. Although some attention will be
given to literary analysis and Classical predecessors, the main
emphasis will be on learning to read such texts with facility. |

- Greek Tragedy |
| Close
reading of two tragedies in the original Greek, with attention
to their literary, dramatic, and cultural significance. Matters
of grammar, metrics and dramaturgy will also be reviewed as needed.
The aim of the course is to enhance students' knowledge and appreciation
of Greek tragic poetry and of tragedy as a literary and cultural
institution, while emphasizing traditional philological methods.
Some secondary reading will be assigned. |
