LAT101 - Beginner's Latin
An introduction to the basic grammar and vocabulary of Latin designed to develop students' fluency in reading and understanding simple Latin prose and verse.

LAT104 - Intensive Intermediate Latin
An alternative to LAT105 for students with two years or more of secondary school Latin who wish to review basic Latin forms, syntax, and vocabulary. Approximately six weeks of intensive review followed by readings from a selection of Latin poetry and prose.

LAT105 - Intermediate Latin: Catullus and His Age
This course aims at increasing facility in reading Latin prose and poetry. We shall read selections from two outstanding authors of the late Roman Republic, Julius Caesar and Catullus.

LAT210 Invective, Slander, and Insult in Latin Literature
This course aims to build skills in reading literary Latin in a variety of genres, both poetry and prose, while introducing students to an important social function shared by many kinds of texts: Winning status and prestige by slandering a rival. The kind of insult that wins over an audience tells us much about Roman values in various realms of public and personal behavior.

LAT234 - Latin Language and Stylistics
A study of the development of Latin prose style, through reading and analysis of selected excerpts from a variety of authors and genres. Practice in translation to and from Latin, and discussion of the principles of stylistic analysis.

Close reading of selected Odes of Horace, considering his poetic program and techniques, together with the contemporary Augustan context.

LAT332 Roman Drama
We will read in Latin all or part of three Roman plays-- the Amphitruo of Plautus and the Eunuchus and Adelphoe of Terence-- and one medieval play by Hrotsvitha of Gandersheim. Additional plays, both Roman and early modern, will be read in English translation. Selected background and interpretative readings.
