REQUIREMENTS FOR CLASSICS MAJORS
Students interested in joining the Department normally should have completed
either Greek 108 or Latin 108. A strongly motivated student who has completed
Greek 102 or Latin 102 may concentrate in the Department with permission
of the Departmental Representative.
As concentrators in the Department, students must complete at least
one course in advanced Greek or Latin (courses numbered 300 and above).
Eight departmental courses are required for graduation. These may include
courses taught in translation and some given by other departments.
All language courses and seminars are small, seldom exceeding 15 students.
Lecture courses in translation are supplemented by precepts, smaller
classes meeting once or twice a week in which the readings and the lecturer's
remarks may be discussed and challenged. For example, the third hour
of Classics 216 Archaic and Classical Greece divides into precepts
of about ten students, while Classics 335 Studies in the Classical Tradition
meets as a class of about ten students twice a week.
