STUDY ABROAD
The Department sees first-hand experience of the Mediterranean as an
important part of a Classicist's training and encourages strudy abroad
in many forms. There are numerous opportunities to study, travel, or
take langugage prorams abroad, and funds are available through a variety
of Departmental and University sources. the Steele Prize, for example,
enables students to travel or study in the Mediterranean during the summer,
while the Robert Murray Fund pays for studies abroad with a preference
for studies in Rome: students should applly to the Departmental Representative
for details.
Juniors occasionally choose to spend a semester or even the whole year
abroad on a different program, for example at Oxford. Each year, several
juniors spend a semester at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical
Studies in Rome,
at which
they
take
courses in literature
and history and visit many ancient sites. Academic credit is given
for this work by prior arrangement with the Departmental Representative
and the Associate Dean of the College responsible for Study Abroad. Princeton
tuition and scholarships may be applied to the cost of overseas study.
Students may also choose to attend the intensive six-week
program at the American School in Athens during the summer after junior
year.
Funds
for study are available from the Department through Harland Prizes and
from the Committee on Hellenic Studies.
