GreekKeys Converter: Converting Traditional GreekKeys files to GreekKeys Unicode

The Classics Department has upgraded to GreekKeys 2005 to take advantage of Unicode support utilizing a cross-platform (Mac/Win) font called "New Athena". To accommodate conversion of older files that contain traditional GreekKeys fonts (ex: Attika and Athenian), we have purchased a license of GreekKeysConverter. This application appears to work accurately in our initial testing. Using GreekKeys Converter will be the fastest, most accurate way to convert your Word files.

GreekKeys Converter has been installed on the Macintosh (far right) in Prentice Library. In planning for conversion of your files, please note that all Word documents should be opened and resaved (Save as...) in RTF format adding the ".rft" extension to the file name.

It also might be helpful to rename the files you're converting to help identify which files contain Traditional GreekKeys. Consider adding "-old" to the file name (but before the .rtf file extension). Ex: "goddesses-old.rtf" identifies this is a Traditional GreekKeys file at a glance.

Once the file has been resaved as .rtf, ensure GreekKeys Converter includes the following preferences:

1) Ensure "GreekKeys (Mac)" is selected as the originating file.

2) Choose "Unicode (RTF), Mac" as the format destination.

3) Select "RTF (Standard) for the file type.

4) Click on "Prefs..." to make font selections (see next graphic).

5) Choose the font that you are converting from (typically this will be "Attika" or "Athenian") by double-clicking on the font's name in the list box.

6) Click on "Unicode..." to select the font you are converting to (see next graphic for the Unicode's dialogue box detail).

7) Use the pulldown menu on the right to specify the Unicode font. Typically this will be "New Athena".

Once you have set up your preferences correctly, you can begin converting the file(s).

A) Drag your file (or folder of files you want to convert) to the Macintosh Desktop.

B) Click on "Convert..." in the GreekKeysConverter main window and navigate to the file or folder of files on the Desktop.

C) GreekKeysConverter will rename your file upon conversion. Example: if your file name was "goddesses-old.rtf" the converted file will be renamed "goddesses-old(conv.).rtf" by default. You have the opportunity to rename the file to your liking in the "Save as..." dialogue box.

The New Athena font is available for both Macintosh and Windows. All University-owned computers within the Classics Department have GreekKeys 2005 and the New Athena font installed. Should you share files containing the New Athena font with those outside of our department, you will want to point them to the font for downloading. <http://ist-socrates.berkeley.edu/~pinax/greekkeys/NAUdownload.html>
