Colonial Ultimate Frisbee Festival (Poolesville, MD)

That's right everyone, it's that time of the week again... MOTS time!

The tournament crew left on Friday, stayed at Petum's house and Banana Chip's (Formerly known as Michael Gibbs). Condolences to Tomi's girlfriend who got her house burned down so he was taking care of business and we were down a couple people who should have been there *cough*isaacpottereveryoneelse*cough* but we had some good numbers going into the first day. Events of friday night were limited, pretty much miheer and Travis sharing a two foot wide couch for the night was the highlight.

Saturday:

When we arrived at the fields we realized that the disk bag had been forgotten and thus we had only the one disc that Banana Chip had brought. Thus, disc acquisition, preferably through illicit means, was a high priority.

Game One: Boston College vs. Princeton

Both teams came out pretty fired up, and the game was fairly even throughout the first half. After being a point or two down, we made a bit of a run and took the break to make it 7-6 to us at the half. After halftime, BC switched to a zone defense, which cause us a lot of problems. They scored a bunch of points in a row to make it 11-8. However, our handlers got it together to put some solid O points together and we brought it back to 10-11. At this point petums got injured on a skying bid and had to sit a point or two and the soft cap went on. This really altered the momentum of the game and some errors on the goal line meant that BC scored two straight points in a row to win it 13-10

Game Two: George Washington Alums vs. Princeton

G Dub alums were seeded first in our pool and represented a group of very skilled and athletic players, so we knew we would have to come out really pumped in order to stay with them. Either that, or wait until the drinking that was occuring on their sidelines was enough to numb the cold--and their frisbee skills. We started playing really hard and stuck with them, pushing through to take half 7-5... We continued to hold the lead, ending the game by winning 10-8. Handlers played quite well this game, especially Taint and James Yan with consistent puts and money punts. Bergman pulled down some hucks and peter tzeng rocked some in cuts.

Game Three part 1: G Dub (young guns) vs. Princeton

G Dub started by pressing us hard with a zone, which we had trouble breaking. A flurry of breaks and break-backs resulted in us being down 1-3, when...

Game Four: Weather vs. All people of a frisbee playing variety

Final score Weather 1, ultimate players 0 after most of the fields had all their cones blow away. The Clockwork disc fund for disadvantaged youth (Mik and Tommy) rose however by 5 new discs... The silver lining on this cloud was the quadruple rainbow that followed the rain storm. (Petums found the pot of gold in a 1998 Chevy Van with Maryland plates... Hunt that shit down)

Game Three part 2: G Dub 3 vs. Princeton 1

After the thirty minute delay due to the weather, both teams came out with new urgency as we knew that the soft cap was not far away. However, our consistent turning over of the disc on our own end zone really became a problem as G Dub smothered us with their zone. Furthermore, we lost a player as Brain revealed his true identity of some sort of reptilian, cold-blooded alien as he nearly became hypothermic with hands as white as petums's silky smooth buttocks. We never really got the intensity going as G Dub pretty much rolled us to a 7-3 victory.

At the end of the day, amusement was had by all as some layout practicing was had. Banana Chip displayed his immutable rock star technique with the sliding-on-the-knees layout, while Daisy managed to lay out and have the most parts of his body touch the ground simultaneously on impact. Has to be seen to be believed.

Saturday night

The team's true goal of the tournament--put swallows and his nut allergy into a world of pain--was revealed as we hit up a burger joint that used only peanut oil for their fries and burgers; their only two food products. We also found out that people can't imagine how fast James Yan can do other things besides running as he "went to meet a friend" and then "stayed up late talking and got back at 2:30 am" *cough*bootycall*cough*...

Sunday

Game One: Duke vs. Princeton

We were in the championship bracket which was good news and better news is we were playing a team containing one of our captains from last year, George. The first half was very hard fought, with very few easy points going either way. My personal highlight of the game was an impromptu game of one on one sudden death "which nut" with George, which I promptly won, calling right (hollllaaa!). Petums and the rest of the handlers were really making the brunt of the plays as cutters had some issues beating their defenders and keeping open space in the middle of the field. At the half we were down 5-8, which was comebackable but we let off a bit in the second half. They pulled down a couple of swilly hucks and had some good offensive flow despite the wicked cross wind to beat us 11-6.

Game Two: Maryland X vs. Princeton

The first half was really close, with us going up 8-7 with some really good zone defense. Also good was our zone offense, which was managing to break their zone consistently. Flow was not just relegated to returners as CinnaBon scored a point on one of our offensive marches. We came out intense after the half as well, but ran into some trouble when they switched to a man defense. Unforced errors caused us a lot of trouble and we let up on defense on the last couple of points. I got pooped on in the end zone for the last score. Boo.

Game Three: Delaware vs. Princeton

They didn't show, we played 500. 'nuff said.

Game Four: Boston College vs. Princeton

This game was sort of arranged on the sly, and we didn't come out with much intensity. Rookies got some playing time which was pretty much the main highlight of the game. That and Spencer's lay out score which he called himself out on (you were in dog!)... Final score BC 6-3.

Amateur Analysis Hour:

The tournament had some up points and down points. Firstly, we need to work on wind throws. However, at times our trap cup zone looked veeery good and also our zone O looked a lot better than I'd seen it last year, and that was with only 4 legit handlers at the tournament. Our fitness level needs to go up as we were flagging at the end of the tournament, but on a good note, we played with every team that we came up against. Also, we have beaten the team that won this tournament, Queens-Kingston, at the last tournament we went to, so the take home message is: we can play with every team we are going to have to face to go to nationals, so lets get in shape and get some throws...

Th-th-that's all folks!

-Swallows and Isaiah

P.S. other fucking lazyass sophmores got the next one of these--Bergman, Miheer, Scabies, Daisy, Peter Tzeng, get on that shit.
