Associations: Opening a File in a Specific Application

I've struggled for a couple of years now trying to find the best format for my glossaries, but I think I've finally hit upon a solution. Now I save my glossaries in text format for use with a wonderful translation tool called Wordfast. Because the glossary is in text format it is searchable by all sorts of programs, compatible with Wordfast, small, and easily viewed with my Clie PDA as well. When I want to print out a glossary, all I have to do is open the document in Excel and it is ready to go.

Students in my classes sometimes ask me how to open a text file in Excel, though, so I've written the procedure below. As you can see, the procedure is useful for specifying file associations as well, since software downloads sometimes take over the associations without asking.

How to Do It

  1. Right-click on the file.
  2. Click Open With アプリケーションから開く
  3. If the program you want is not listed, click "Choose Program (プログラムの選択)" to choose the program you want.
  4. Click on the program you want. I chose Excel, and since the terms and definitions are separated by tabs, Excel automatically puts them in separate cells for you.
  5. If you always want to open this type of file with this program, put a checkmark in the box labelled Always use the selected program to open this kind of file これらのファイルを開くときは、いつもこのアプリケーションを使う . I only use this feature for sound or image files.
