  5. Japan Knowledge ジャパンナレッジ: a single search accesses several databases about Japan including the Encyclopedia of Japan.
  6. Bibliography of Asian Studies: "contains over 640,000 records on all subjects (especially in the humanities and the social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide from 1971 to the present"
  7. WorldCat: incredibly useful for finding books, it gives "access to a rich collection of reference databases. With FirstSearch, materials in your library’s collection are highlighted in results from searches in dozens of leading databases."
  8. Project Muse: "collaboration between libraries and publishers providing 100% full-text, affordable and user-friendly online access to over 300 high quality humanities, arts, and social sciences journals from 60 scholarly publishers"
  9. Questia: "world's largest online collection of books and journal articles in the humanities and social sciences, plus magazine and newspaper articles." Even without a password, this is rather useful.

  1. ALC: one of the best E←→J dictionaries because it shows words in context, but it is not so helpful with historical terminology

  3. Infoseek: Kanji dictionary provides basic information, and other dictionaries are generally good.
  4. Goo: I don't find it to be as useful as Yahoo! or the others.

  2. Dictionary of Sources of Classical Japan 欧文日本古代史料解題辞典: a great way to become familiar with Japanese sources. First, click on 「データベース選択画面」 at the bottom of the page. Next, click on the link on the right. Then, enter your name and email at the bottom of the screen that pops up.
  3. Shôsôin 正倉院: official site for this Todaiji repository, which has acted as a giant time capsule to preserve items from the Nara period.
  4. 平安京図: this PDF file is nice because you can zoom in on places without the characters becoming too blurry.
  5. 平安京大内裏図: click on the names of buildings to see a close-up. Unfortunately, qality of images is inconsistent.
  6. 安政造営内裏図: a beautiful old map of Kyoto that is zoomable, but somewhat difficult to manipulate.
  7. 内裏図: nice map for getting an idea of what the palace used to look like in Kyoto.

  9. Samurai Archives: I've always loved their site, especially the backgrounds.

Unfortunately, the site uses frames, so you'll have to do a search for "japanese kanji" or lose the site navigation and go directly to the html version.
