So, you want to take a screenshot with Evernote?

Both Mac and Windows users have the ability to easily take screenshots and get them into Evernote, but as you might expect, the process is slightly different on each platform. Windows users should skip to the second part.

Mac

The Evernote Helper installs in your Mac's top menu bar and ought to appear whenever you are using Evernote. Make sure to check your settings if you don't see it. I prefer to have it on all the time.

Please note that this is the feature previously known as the "Evernote Menu Bar Clipper" in the Evernote for Mac User Guide. Don't get this confused with the Evernote Web Clipper, which places an icon into your browser and enables you to clip Web pages.

First, in the Mac desktop version of Evernote, click on the gray Elephant-head icon in the Mac's top menu bar (a lot of things are many shades of gray these days on the Mac).

Second, choose "Clip Rectangle or Window to Evernote".

Third, select the area you want to clip by dragging the box over it, and Evernote will create a note with that image inside it. It is imaginatively titled "Screenshot". You might want to make a change to that. See my page on minimalism to get my take on note naming.

Fourth, you can also change your clipping preferences if you want by clicking on the Elephant-head icon and selecting "Clipping Preferences..." or choosing your Evernote Preferences.

Windows

On Windows, the Evernote Helper installs in your system tray in the bottom right corner of your screen, next to the clock. It works much like the Evernote Helper on the Mac. You probably won't get this mixed up with the Evernote Web Clipper, which places an icon into your browser and enables you to clip Web pages, but I thought we'd clear up any possible confusion before jumping into it.

First, click on the Evernote Helper in the system tray, which is located in the bottom-right hand corner of the screen. It is the green Elephant-head icon.

Second, right-click on the Evernote Helper and choose "Clip Screenshot".

Third, select the area you want to clip by dragging the box over it, and Evernote will create a note with that image inside it. It carries the exciting and descriptive title of "Screen clip". You might want to make a change to that. See my page on minimalism to get my take on note naming.

Finally, don't forget to look in the Tools section for your Clipping Preferences.
