Henley Royal Regatta Coverage
HENLEY-ON-THAMES, ENGLAND- On Sunday, July 2, the Princeton varsity met up with the Leander Club in the final of the Ladies Plate. Princeton established an early lead and held their advantage throughout to win by 1/2 length in a time of 6.19. The Princeton crew contains five of the nine members that won the Temple Cup at Henley as freshman in 2003. This win gives them, and Princeton, their second Henley win in four years. We are very proud of Curtis and the crew. Congratulations!

Tribute to George Teagle Clements '86
Racing Shell Endowed in Honor of Inspiring Oarsman.
PRINCETON – More than 100 people gathered at the Princeton Boathouse to dedicate a racing shell in honor of George Teagle Clements ’86, a charismatic rower who passed away just two years after his graduation. The event followed a four-month drive that collected approximately $93,000 from more than 60 donors, and created a permanent endowment. The consistent message from the speakers was that Princeton rowers of today and tomorrow could draw upon the courage and tenacity of George Teagle Clements ’86, who touched the lives of so many of his teammates and classmates.

Ahrens Rows To Gold In Athens; Silver
For Nelson
and Herschmiller
Princetonians have big Sunday at Olympic
Games
Chris Ahrens shared the Roper Trophy in 1998 as Princeton's
top senior sportsman. It was hardly the last athletic honor he
would win.
Ahrens, rowing Sunday morning in Athens, helped the Unites States
win its first Men's Eights Olympic gold medal since 1964. The
U.S. boat took the lead early and held off a modest charge for the
runner-up Dutch
boat to win in 5:42.48, 1.27 seconds ahead of the Netherlands.
Lianne Bennion-Nelson '95 earned a silver medal with in the Women's Eights.
The United States team led early in the race before Romania
took control to win by almost two seconds. The Netherlands
finished third.
Danika Harris-Holbrook '95 finished sixth in the Women's Quadruple
Sculls.
Tom Herschmiller, a 2001 Princeton grad, rowed to a silver medal as part
of the Canadian men's fours team Saturday in Athens.
Herschmiller's
Canadian Four led the boat from Great Britain heading into the
final 500 meters, but the Brits crossed the line less than a tenth-of-a-second
ahead of Canada in the end.
Herschmiller had also rowed for the
Canadian eight in Sydney, finishing seventh overall.

Open Women Fall Short In Henley Final
Terrific 2004 season ends three lengths short of
first Henley win.
A wonderful 2004 season, including an undefeated Ivy League schedule
and an Eastern title, ended just short of history Sunday morning.
In the final of the Remenham Challenge at the annual Henley Championships,
the
Princeton open crew fell to the Thames Rowing Club and University
of London.
Princeton, which defeated Osiris Boat Club in the quarterfinals
and the University of British Columbia & University of Victoria,
Canada in the semifinals, fell by three lengths in Sunday's
final. The Tigers
were looking to bring home Princeton's first women's title
at Henley, but they still equalled the best ever finish by
a women's crew at Henley.
July 3, 2004
Open Crew To Race For Henley Title Sunday
Princeton
looks for first championship women's team in final of Remenham Challenge.
The Princeton open crew is one race away from making even more history
in an already historic 2004 campaign. The tigers won their quarterfinal
and semifinal races at the Henley and will compete against Thames R.C.
and University of London in Sunday's final. The Tigers, who earned the trip to Henley by winning the 2004 Eastern
Sprints, defeated the Osiris Boat Club by four lengths in the
quarterfinal to compete against the University of British Columbia & the
University of Victoria. Princeton rose to the challenge once again,
winning
by more than three lenghts.

Women's Lightweight Crew Places Second in
IRA Grand Final
Freshman fours with cox on men's side wins third-level
final
CAMDEN, N.J. - The Princeton women's varsity lightweight
eight placed second in the grand final today behind Wisconsin at
the 2004 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta on the
Cooper River in Camden,
N.J.
The Tigers' time of 7:18.02 was more than one second better
than third-place Radcliffe and well clear of fourth-place
Georgetown. Wisconsin won the race in an impressive time of 7:06.36. Princeton
had reached the
grand final after finishing second in their first heat behind
Wisconsin and then winning their repechage heat the next
day
by an
impressive
11 seconds. Princeton's men's varsity lightweight eight also
had a strong performance, finishing in third place behind Navy
and Georgetown
in the grand
final in that event after finishing second in their initial
heat.
The Tiger heavyweight men's varsity eight placed fifth in the grand
final in Camden. Princeton's time of 6:03.16 was just behind Navy
in fourth. Princeton had placed third in its semifinal
race behind eventual
grand
final winner
Harvard after winning its repechage heat earlier in the
regatta.
Princeton won the third-level final of the men's freshman fours
w/coxswain by defeating Rutgers by nearly four seconds in
that
race. The Tigers also
reached the grand final of the men's freshman eight, finishing
in sixth place in that race.
