What can I expect from auditions? What kind of experience do I need?
Many eXpressions girls were dancers in high school, but their backgrounds and training are all over the map. Come ready to sweat and smile. We’ll start with introductions, so that you can get to know us and we can get to know you. We’ll do a warm-up together—the kinds of things we do as a company every time we get together to start prepping for a show.
Next, we’ll do kicks and turns across the floor. The combinations are usually simple, so show us what you can do. Then the real dancing starts. By the end of auditions, you will have learned two one-minute pieces: a lyrical, contemporary or modern piece and a jazz or hip-hop piece. We’ll learn each as a group and give you plenty of time to practice them again and again and again. And then a little more.
Finally, we get to watch you perform. We’ll break you up into groups of three of four and you’ll do two runs in front of the company: a “practice” run, with a company member in front of you (to get the brain farts out), and a final run (to blow us away).
We finish up with a big circle: the company and everyone auditioning can jump up and show off any tricks you’ve got (leaps, jumps, turns or incredible feats of flexibility are all welcome).
A list of dancers we’d like to call back will be posted at Frist. Callbacks are just like auditions—only you’ve got more space to dance and you’ll already know the pieces, which makes it twice as fun. Can’t wait to see you there! |
