Your assignment is to write a 1000 word (4 page) essay on Hal as a dramatic character.
Hal is, in various senses of the word, a character. He is the representation of a distinct human being, complex and even contradictory, but also part of a dramatic design. He is a young man much like many others, but he is also heir apparent to a very wobbly throne of England. He is the center of other characters' interest, and in turn he comments on those characters. In addition, he establishes a special relationship with the audience, by speaking to us in soliloquy and making us privy to his plans.
Your opinion of Hal will be interesting only to the extent that it is grounded in the language and actions of the play, and in turn helps to illuminate that language and action. As in all your essays, the best way to proceed is from the specific. You could use a single incident or scene, or concentrate on Hal in relation to one other character. Gut feeling is a good place to begin, but the feeling needs to be translated into a thought and articulated as the thesis of an essay.
