- Workbook: Macbeth -

You will write an essay either about representations of gender or of children in Macbeth. (See the instructions under Essay.) As a step toward writing, you should gather evidence for your thesis, in the form of quotations, including significant images and metaphors, from the play. Go to Text where you will find a word-searchable version of Macbeth. (Note that the on-line text is differently edited from your Signet, and that Act-scene-line numbers may differ.) Use it to help collect the raw materials for your essay. (To do this, you'll have to have some idea of your thesis; but the discoveries you make may modify that thesis as you go along.) Obviously you'll want to check out the words "man," "woman," and "children." What others can you find that might be relevant to your essay?

The assignment has two steps. First make a simple list of the relevant data you've located by using the word-search. Then choose one of the words or passages you've located and in a single brief paragraph indicate how it might contribute to the idea you want to develop in your essay.

Please note: when you link to Text from this page, Macbeth will open, covering this page. However, if you use your cursor to shrink the Macbeth page (thus keeping this page partially visible), you can click back and forth between them. You can even cut-and-paste the sections you find directly from the text into the box below. E-mail your results to your preceptor.
