Princeton GCCS Log July 30, 2006 1600 GMT GCT file: asap_0806_v2 Gliders under control: we07, we08, we09, we10, we12 Coordination plan: two gliders (we08 and we10) are assigned to the northern track in a counter-clockwise direction and will seek to remain on opposite sides of the track. Similarly, gliders we09 and we12 are assigned to the middle track in a counter-clockwise direction and will seek to remain on opposite sides of the track. Gliders we07 is assigned to the southern track in a counter-clockwise direction. In addition, the two pairs of gliders on the northern and middle tracks will seek to become synchronized, i.e. for each glider on the northern track there should be a glider at the same point on the middle track. Coordination summary: Since gliders we08 and we12 came under coordinated control approximately 2300 GMT yesterday, they have been making good headway to their track assignments. In fact, we12 has reached the middle track and is rounding the southern, onshore corner. Glider we08 is expected to reach the onshore edge of the northern track this afternoon. Glider we10 is rounding the offshore corner of the northern track and heading south in substantially reduced flow conditions relative to yesterday. The flow on the northern edge of the glider sampling domain is substantially weaker than was expected. Nonetheless, there is a strong (25+ cm/s) northern/offshore flow in the southeastern portion of the sampling domain. Glider we09 was subject to this flow when it reached 50+ cm/s effective speed while crossing the middle track. Both we09 and we07 are approaching the offshore edge of their respect boxes. Glider OA Flow summary: the strong northern flow along the northern edge of the sampling domain has subsided a bit but still persists offshore of the northern edge. Northern flow has strengthened in the south eastern portion of the sampling domain in excess of 25 cm/s. Outlook: the 24 hour coordination prediction looks good for the four gliders on the northern and middle tracks. The southern track has only one assigned glider in anticipation of an additional glider deployment from the Santa Cruz vicinity early this week.
