DEAD STOCKS

Sample Search: Give the Datasream code for Candy’s Tortilla Factory, a de-listed stock.

Note: Finding the code for dead stocks is very similar to finding the code for active stocks. Entering the macros for dead stocks is identical to that of active stocks. For steps on entering and running the macro for a dead stock, see www.princeton.edu/~econlib/ds2/equities.htm.

Finding the code:

When a stock is de-listed, Datastream stops using the equity's ticker symbol and assigns a code to it.

On the main Datastream screen, enter CODE in the box next to Program Number. Press Enter.

Enter Candy’s Tortilla Factory on the line that asks for a keyword.

In the following bank of choices, D should be selected for dead stock.

NOTE: Dead stock is not a listed option. You must enter "D" or you will not be able to retrieve information for the de-listed stock.

Select U$ under Currency Symbol. Press Enter.

Rather than a mnemonic, there is a numeric code listed for the stock. The code is 545539

Use this code as you would use a mnemonic when entering the macro.

Entering the macro:

Entering the macro for a dead stock is identical to that for an active stock. See the Equities Sample Search for a full description.

Things to Remember:

Remember that stocks that move from one exchange to another are not "de-listed". The entire data series for a stock that switches from one exchange to another may be found using the code associated with it in its new location. Likewise, when a name change occurs, the history remains on that one code and only the equity's name is changed.
