OTTOMAN TURKISH

Introduction to Ottoman Turkish [NES 504] is offered in the fall semester in the Near Eastern Studies Department. The objective of the course is to develop proficiency in reading Ottoman Turkish in print. Reading selections will be taken from late Ottoman and early Republican publications.

Although the course will emphasize reading, students will be encouraged to develop writing skills to facilitate transition to Ottoman paleography.

The course meets for one hour, three times a week, and is open to undergraduates who know Modern Turkish.

Teaching Materials

  • Reading Selections from Ottoman schoolbooks, short stories, and newspaper articles
