EE579 Pervasive Information Systems - Prof. Wayne Wolf, Prof. Perry Cook.

This class was about pervasive systems (also called ubiquitous).

We had one major project for the semester. I partnered with Mitchell Kleinmann to propose and implement a project we called "Lower My PSE&G Bill". PSE&G is the local power company. The idea was that people are unaware of their usage patterns of electricity and this leads to wasteful behavior. We designed a system which you would plug into an outlet and then plug any appliance into our device. Our device would measure the power usage at a regular interval (5-15 seconds) and wirelessly (Zigbee) transmit the data, perhaps using intermediate nodes to help route, to a central PC which would collect, analyze, and display the data (from all nodes). We also have nodes with cameras to allow us to correlate usage with presence. Then, for example, a user could know they wasted X watts (translates to Y dollars) by leaving on the TV when they weren't in the room. Below are the various proposals and final report/presentation.

Project Proposal II: Lower My PSE&G Bill
