MAJOR SCIENTIFIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Established the relationship between octahedral and trigonal prismatic coordination and determined the steric and electronic factors responsible for the adoption of these two geometries in six-coordination. (With G. F. Brown)

Demonstrated for the first time that organometallic moieties can move intramolecularly between rings in polynuclear aromatic complexes. (With K. M. Nicholas, R. C. Kerber)

Proposed the first comprehensive mechanism for the action of molybdenum in enzymes involving coupled proton and electron transfer at the molybdenum site. This mechanistic insight has served and continues to serve as a basis for experiments and interpretations in the field.

Prepared the first isolated metal complexes of the anti-Parkinsonism drug L-DOPA and showed that the mode of L-DOPA binding to copper is extremely sensitive to physiologically relevant solution conditions. (With W.-L. Kwik)

Wrote the first comprehensive review on the coordination and bioinorganic chemistry of molybdenum. This review served as a dramatic stimulus to the field and is a citation classic quoted in over 800 publications.

Used electron spin resonance spectroscopy to show proton hyperfine splitting in molybdenum enzymes comes from ligand protons and not from metal hydrides as previously proposed. (With N. Pariyadath)

Using specifically designed and synthesized ligands, prepared the first oxo complexes of molybdenum with spectroscopic properties identical to a molybdenum enzyme (sulfite oxidase). This was one of the first chemical uses of synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy and demonstrated the power of EXAFS in bioinorganic chemistry. (With J. L. Corbin, N. Pariyadath, J. M. Berg, K. O. Hodgson, S. P. Cramer)

Developed a highly used anaerobic purification of the nitrogenase enzyme system. Showed conclusively that enzymatic nitrogen fixation is inhibited by molecular hydrogen in a manner that gives insight into the mechanism of biological dinitrogen reduction. (With B. K. Burgess, S. Wherland, W. E. Newton)

Discovered the existence of a ferritin-like protein in the bacterium Azotobacter vinelandii and coined the name "bacterioferritin" for this new class of proteins. Now known in many species, the bacterioferritins, unlike their mammalian counterparts, contain heme and undergo unprecedented redox reactions. (With G. D. Watt) Cloned and sequenced the bacterioferritin gene and established ferritins as a homologous class (With S. Hinton and M. J. Grossman). EXAFS studies (with G. George, G. D. Watt) proved the unique bis(methionine) heme coordination.

Discovered a new form of six-coordination with a partial disulfide bond coordinated to hexavalent molybdenum and skew trapezoidal bipyramidal six-coordination. (With K. F. Miller, J. M. Berg and K. O. Hodgson)

Showed that in molybdenum-sulfur systems redox activity can be confined solely to the sulfur ligands and that di- and trinuclear complexes can undergo multi-electron redox processes involving as many as 12 electrons without changing the oxidation state of the metal. (With K. F. Miller, W.-H. Pan, T. R. Halbert)

Discovered facile internal electron transfer processes in molybdenum-sulfur chemistry induced by external redox agents. Induced internal electron transfer, previously only well known in Taube's classic work in Co chemistry, has been extended to W, V, and Re complexes. Mechanistic work has laid the basis for the potent use of these reactions in synthetic inorganic chemistry. (With W.-H. Pan, T. R. Halbert, M. A. Harmer, C. L. Coyle, L. Wei, H. H. Murray)

Showed that organic molecules such as acetylenes and carbenes react with certain transition metal sulfide systems by insertion of the organic group into the metal-sulfur bond forming both sulfur-carbon and metal-carbon bonds. Theoretical studies have elucidated the reasons for this unusual reactivity pattern. (With T. R. Halbert, S. A. Cohen, W.-H. Pan, J. Bernholc)

Using controlled, planned syntheses, rather than 'spontaneous self-assembly', prepared new heterometallic 'thiocubane' and linear clusters and showed their potential relevance to solid state chemistry, heterogeneous catalysis, and bioinorganic chemistry. Developed theoretical underpinnings for the now broad biological and synthetic thiocubane class of compounds. (With T. R. Halbert, S. A. Cohen, S. Harris)

Prepared and structurally characterized the first metal complexes of biologically relevant pterin ligands and demonstrated the effects that coordination has on the chemistry of the pterins. (With S. J. N. Burgmayer)

Prepared and magnetically characterized a tetranuclear chromium cluster containing 12 unpaired electrons. This unique S=6 cluster displays strong ferromagnetic coupling. Its high magnetic moment makes it useful in NMR imaging and a host of other applications. (With A. Bino, D. Johnston)

Demonstrated by Electron Spin Echo Spectroscopy that protein N-ligands, likely imidazoles, interact directly to with FeMoco center of nitrogenase. (With H. Thomann, R. Bare, T. V. Morgan)

Showed the potential relationship between enzymatic and heterogeneous catalysis in transition metal sulfide systems. Found molecular clusters to be valuable precursors to active hydrotreating and coal-liquefaction catalysts. (With R. R. Chianelli, T. R. Halbert, C. L. Coyle, T. C. Ho, E. Edelson, W.-H. Pan)

Discovered the low-valent promotion (LVP) techniques for enhancement of the catalytic activity of molybdenum sulfide catalysts. Grafting of organometallic complexes on the edges of MoS2 was predicted and demonstrated using techniques developed in molecular cluster chemistry. Highly selective hydrodesulfurization catalysts were prepared using LVP. (With T. R. Halbert, R. R. Chianelli, T. C. Ho)

Synthesized a series of oil soluble molybdenum sulfur and heterometallic complexes and clusters that show superior activity as multi-functional activity as lubricant additives in motor and diesel oils in anti-wear, anti-friction, and anti-oxidancy. (With J. M. McConnachie, C. L. Coyle, T. R. Halbert, M. A. Greaney, P. J. Guzi,, W. Pan, H. Fang)

Used internal redox reactions to discover a new series of rhenium sulfur compounds, which display increased reactivity toward organic molecules and serve as molecular precursors and models for hydrotreating catalysts. (with L. Wei, T. R. Halbert, H. H. Murray, C. A. McConnachie, J. M. McConnachie, S. Luo, S. Sherman, K. Eriksen)

Developed a synthetic strategy using pterin acetylenes and metal polysulfide complexes that led to synthesis of the first pterin ene-dithiolate complex related to the molybdenum cofactor. Unprecedented pterin ene-trithiolate complexes are formed as reactive precursors suggeesting internal redox processes in molybdenum enzymes. (With R. S. Pilato, Y. J. Gea, K. Eriksen, E. C. Taylor, T. G. Spiro, A. L. Rheingold)

Developed a new synthetic strategy for dithiolene complexes using induced redox chemistry and demonstrated the use on dithiolene complexes in electro-separation of olefins. New homoleptic 1:1 dithiolene palladium complexes reveal hexanuclear structure that are precursors to coordinatively unsaturated metal dithiolene complexes. (With K. Wang, C. L. Beswick, M. Greaney, R. Terroba)

Developed the bioremediation strategy for the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which led to fertilizer application to over 70 miles of shoreline in Prince William Sound and dramatic stimulation of microbial oil biodegradation. (With S. M. Hinton, R. C. Prince, M. J. Grossman, R. R. Chianelli)
