During the 2005-2006 school year, EWB–Princeton drew up plans for a small diversion dam and ram pump that would facilitate the transfer of water from the river gorge to the fields without requiring fossil fuels or expensive upkeep. Unfortunately, due to severe flash flooding the dam was destroyed. While still on the ground, EWB-Princeton redesigned the project to use overland siphon technology, which was temporarily feasible but not a long term solution. Undaunted, the Ethiopia team went back to the drawing boards. Six students returned to Kumudo in December 2008 and successfully implemented the current water distribution system in place that consists of two locally manufactured treadle pumps.
