A new global research network

Supported by the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies, the Global Network on Inequality consists of 25 institutes and university departments across Western Europe, Japan, Brazil, India, South Africa, China, Korea, Chile, and Israel with more countries planned for the future. The purpose of the network is to encourage and facilitate the placement of Princeton doctoral students in the social sciences with interests in questions of inequality in overseas institutes that have agreed to provide space, intellectual mentorship, data sets, and fieldwork opportunities. Faculty from our 25 partners visit Princeton periodically for conferences and individual seminars to present their work as well.
Students are awarded GNI fellowships that cover approximately two months in residence plus travel costs. Two basic options for research are available: development of an original research paper of the student's choosing that can be effectively carried out in one of our partner institutes; or participation in an ongoing project belonging to a GNI affiliate. Projects need not be related to dissertations. Students with long term regional interests are welcome to apply as are students who do not intend to do comparative or regional scholarship in the future. The program encourages students who are U.S. focused to broaden their experience.
