RESEARCH

Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Science Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi

The Centre for the Study of Social Systems was established in 1971 for undertaking teaching and research in a comparative perspective in the two basic areas of sociology viz., social mobilization and change and advancing sociological theories with substantive field research.  It was felt that the Centre must encourage an interdisciplinary approach and a comparative perspective.  In pursuance of this mandate, the faculty, students and other research staff of the Centre have, over the years, made valuable contributions in Sociology in the following areas:  Modernization and Development, Professions and Professionalization, Social Stratification, Social Movements and Social mobilization, Studies of Marginalized Groups, Minorities and Dalits, Tribes and Ethnicity, Gender and Gender Relations, Indian Diaspora, Religion and Cultural Studies.  Increasing attention is also being paid to the following issues:  Sociological Theory, Quantitative Methods in Social Research, Social Demography, Social Psychology, Historical Anthropology, Social Ecology, Globalization, Media Studies, Modern Indian Social Thought, and Agrarian Studies.

Library access

GNI fellows will have access to the DSA (Dept. of Special Assistance) library which has a splendid collection of books relating to contemporary sociological theory as well as areas of social research.  It is open on all working days from 10:00 a.m. until 5 p.m.  The Centre also maintains, along with the Dr. Ambedkar Chair, a collection of books on Ambedkar’s thought and philosophy, as well as on dalits and minorities.

Research seminars

The Centre organizes weekly seminars every Thursday.  These seminars aim at sharing and disseminating new knowledge and research findings.  It is a forum that enables students to interact with distinguished researchers and scholars who are invited to speak on different topics.
