Research

Datasets and library access

There are no common datasets available for GNI students to use at the moment. Individual members of the CSSI have their own datasets. Prof. Mitch Sato will be the liaison between the professors and students for dataset access. MORE INFO TO COME ON THIS SUBJECT.
There is no library access because GNI students won't have an official visiting fellowship.

Research Seminars

GNI students are welcome to attend any workshop taking place. Workshops are held regularly on Mondays. Occasionally, there are special workshops.

Practical Information

Accomodation

Tohoku University International House - the residence hall for international students - will be unavailable for GNI students since they will be in Japan officially as tourists. Therefore, GNI students should contact Airin Izumi, Secretary, Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality (CSSI). She can be reached through e-mail at coesec@sal.tohoku.ac.jp. She can also be reached at the following address and phone number:

Airin Izumi, Secretary
Center for the Study of Social Stratification and Inequality
Graduate School of Arts and Letters
Tohoku University
27-1 Kawauchi, Aoba-ku
Sendai 980-8576
JAPAN
phone and fax: +81 22 795 6011

Students should contact Airin at least three months before they are due to arrive in Sendai. Monthly rents range from 65000 yen to 80000 yen (approx. $588 to $724 in U.S. dollars.)

Office Space

GNI students may share an office with three other CSSI students and postdocs if the space is available. They should check with Airin Izumi, CSSI secretary, about the availability before they visit the CSSI. She can be reached at coesec@sal.tohoku.ac.jp. Access to the Internet is also available at the office, although students do not have the privilege of e-mail addresses at Tohoku University.

Timing

Any time of year is good for visiting CSSI in Sendai; however, since GNI students are expected to do their research with faculty members of the CSSI, they should schedule their trips around the time when the person they will be working with is in town and available.

Professors

Any professor on the roster of the CSSI can be an advisor. Prof. Sato will match GNI students and CSSI professors based on their research topics.

Visa

GNI students will come to Japan as tourists, so they will not need a visa as long as their country of origin has a visa waiver agreement with Japan. Also, their stay must be under three months long.
