Princeton University Campus Greens

The Princeton Greens provides students and other members of the Princeton community with an alternative outlet for engagement in national, state, and local politics.   We seek to empower citizens through participation in a grass-roots movement for social justice, equal opportunity, and environmental and economic sustainability.  Building on the strength of 2000 Green Party campaigns both in New Jersey and nationally, we hope to create a lasting Green Party presence on campus.

As we seek to familiarize the university community with the values and goals of the Green Party, we plan to sponsor debates, teach-ins, and other educational events and to host prominent speakers on campus.  Weekly meetings, currently held on the first floor of Murray-Dodge, provide a forum for debate and discussion of various issues of concern to the group and for the planning of upcoming events.  We also seek to develop ties to local, state, and national Green Party groups, as well as to other progressive groups, both on and off campus.  We believe that meaningful political involvement must emerge from the bottom up and at all times be rooted in the ideal of participatory democracy.   For more information about the Princeton Greens please contact us at greens@princeton.edu.

If you would like more information about the Green Party and what it stands for, a good place to start is the 2000 Green Party Platform statement.   Another excellent resource is the list of issue statements prepared by Ralph Nader's 2000 campaign.

History

The Princeton Greens was founded in the fall of 2000 by a group of Princeton students and members of the local community with a shared interest in Green politics and Ralph Nader's campaign for the presidency.  In October, we organized a speaking engagement by Ralph Nader here at Princeton to a full house of enthusiastic students and local residents.  As election day approached the group helped coordinate local get-out-the-vote efforts for Nader/Laduke and other Green party candidates.
