Corporate Grants, Carbon Sequestration and Academic Freedom

MY NAME IS NOAH KAYE

I am researching the "Carbon Mitigation Initiative" (CMI) at the Princeton Environmental Institute. CMI is sponsored by a joint $20 million grant from British Petroleum and Ford Motor Company, the largest corporate grant in Princeton University history. Carbon sequestration is a short term solution for the well-documented global warming effect caused by the massive amounts of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere. Such a research is a guarantee to the oil and auto industries that the world economy will not shift away from fossil fuels. That is of course, why they are interested in coughing up millions of dollars. I am interested in finding out what the price of accepting this kind of money -- for this kind of research -- is in terms of 1) the future of the planet and 2) the future of academic freedom. At the current time I am doing basic research. These are some of the links I'm using. If you would like to get involved please contact me at nkaye@princeton.edu

COMMERCIAL SEQUESTRATION:

Geologic sequestration: the Sleipner project by Statoil, BP, Amoco & Mobil is already functional, and is the world's first commercial-scale storage of CO2 for mitigation of climate change.

What Statoil has to say about it's project:

OTHER FORMS OF SEQUESTRATION:

There are three main avenues of sequestration: geologic sequestration, ocean sequestration, and sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems.
