This working group will work on economic change and its social consequences. Its focus includes trade agreements, such as NAFTA and the China Trade Act; as well as the international organizations which encourage such trade agreements, like the WTO, IMF, and World Bank. The working group will also look at outsourcing -- the corporate practice of transferring jobs to a country where wages are cheapest -- and sweatshop labor. We're interested in the dangerous and unfair labor practices in factories throughout the developing world -- but we'll also look at labor issues in the United States, including union-busting, downsizing and the fight for a living wage.

Specific interests and campaigns at the national and international level include: the African Growth and Opportunity Act, the plans to expand NAFTA into a Free Trade of the Americas Area, and the initial effects of the 2000 passage of the China Trade Act. We're also looking at labor practices in the so-called 'new economy', including efforts to unionize employees in the high-tech sector.

At the local level, we're joining the fight to get a better deal for Princeton's lowest-paid workers - Campus Greens are taking a leading role in the Workers Rights Organizing Committee, which is aiming to improve wages and conditions for dining services, janitorial and other University employees -- and to safeguard permanent jobs from the threat of outsourcing and low-paid temporary labor.
