Hellenic Studies Workshop Athina Vogiatzoglou (University of Ioannina; Visiting Fellow, Program in Hellenic Studies) Title: "National" Poetry and Strategies of Succession: A Greek Case, Kalvos and Sikelianos
ABSTRACT: I will examine the social, political and cultural circumstances that generated and sustained the existence of literate bilinguals in Greek and Arabic throughout the Middle Ages, by considering concrete examples of mostly unpublished religious, philological and scientific manuscripts from Egypt, Syria/Palestine and Sicily/Southern Italy. Samples will be shown and discussed, in order to explain how not only their content, but also their format and physical appearance can help us understand the functions of bilingualism and the transmission of knowledge in bilingual circles.
