"To be Greek and to be Greek American are two very different things. I was born Greek, I was baptized in Greece, and I was a Greek every summer of my life when my family would visit our village in Crete. It wasn’t until I started Greek School in 2nd grade that I was introduced to being Greek American. From the “Oxi” poems delivered on October 28th, to the dances performed in full Amalia costume on March 25th, I learned that Greek Americans were proud of their heritage.
In photographing the Greek Independence Day Parade in New York City this year, I hoped to get a take on this pride. I found exactly what I expected…over the top Hellenic spirit in every way it can possibly be shown. I feel that the humor in the pictures especially brings out this sense of pride; we Greek Americans are willing to look slightly ridiculous on select days every year in order to celebrate our heritage."
