Modern Greek Studies Association
THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY SYMPOSIUM
PRINCETON UNIVERSITY
ROBERTSON HALL, Woodrow Wilson School
Thursday, November 4th – Sunday, November 7th, 1999
PRINCETON -- On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the MGSA and the 20th anniversary of the Program in Hellenic Studies at Princeton University, this Symposium will offer nineteen panels and fifty-seven speakers on topics concerning modern Greece. Speakers from American, European and Australian universities and colleges will speak on aspects of modern Greek history, politics, literature, anthropology, society and culture.
The Modern Greek Studies Association is an American-based, non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of modern Greek Studies in the United States and Canada. The Association welcomes teachers, students, scholars and anyone with an interest in modern Hellenism, and sponsors a wide range of activities, publications and prizes in the field of Modern Greek Studies.
Founded at Princeton in 1969 with Princeton University Professor Edmund Keeley as its first President, the MGSA has over 500 members, most of whom are American scholars representing all the disciplines of the humanities and the social sciences. The MGSA is the sole American professional organization that promotes the scholarly study of modern Greece and the Greek diaspora, and publishes the semiannual Journal of Modern Greek Studies. Every other year, the MGSA Symposium is hosted by a different institution. This fall it will be held at Princeton, thirty years after the first MGSA Symposium was held here. In addition to the regular academic program, a series of events (Keynote Addresses and Poetry Reading) have been organized with the participation of distinguished Greek scholars and writers. These events will celebrate Greek letters and the scholarly achievements of Greek academics, and are designed to attract the broader public. There will also be book and art exhibits.
The Program in Hellenic Studies at Princeton University aims to strengthen teaching and research in all aspects of Classical, Late Antique, Byzantine and Modern Greek civilization. The Program also promotes academic collaboration between Princeton faculty and students and their counterparts at Greek institutions. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees, a comprehensive curriculum, undergraduate scholarships, graduate and post-doctoral fellowships, scholarships for study and research in Greece, and writer-in-residence fellowships. The Princeton Program in Hellenic Studies is under the general direction of the Council of the Humanities and operates with the support of the Stanley J. Seeger Hellenic Fund.
