Writing Assignments

Journal of Your Reading

As you go through the readings this semester, you should write a paragraph or two (but no more) for each of the items. Begin with the question(s) the author is asking, identify the main points of the argument, and finish up with the the thoughts or questions you think the reading raises for our consideration. Please email your paragraphs for each week's reading (starting with the second week) to me by 9:00 PM on the evening preceding the seminar and bring a copy with you to class, since one or more of the entries, as read by the authors, will become the starting point for our discussions.

Assignments (TBA)

Some Ground Rules

  1. Fancy formatting and snappy fonts don't enhance writing or hide its faults. Stick to a standard font and unjustified right margins.
  2. Misspellings and typos betoken lack of care and attention. Spelling checkers eliminate all excuses for them. Use yours and, while you're at it, use the dictionary whenever you misspell a word or are uncertain about its spelling, to be sure that you in fact know what the word means and that it's the right word.
