Exams

The writing requirement is two exams, taken at Mid-Term and in Reading Period, each on one-half of the reading.

They are take-home exams, and you may use your texts and Internet resources to research answers.

The questions may include some short-answer identification of important terms or phrases.

Other questions will ask for essay-answers on broader questions that connect one or more of the readings.

Grades

Students are expected to attend seminars, complete readings, participate in discussions, present a talk, serve as scribe and take the exams. Evident use of the Web site is strongly encouraged.

Letter grades: A (Excellent) B (Very Good) C (Satisfactory) D (Pass) F (Failure)

Percentages: Discussion: 20%, Scribe: 20%, Slide Talk: 20%, Exams 40%

Absences

The seminar meets once a week, for three hours. If you are absent any part of that time, I will mark you as absent. (That includes "excused absences" for sickness, family matters, or athletic events.)

You may make up two absences by writing 500-word (2-page) commentaries on the day's reading. Send that to me by e-mail before the next seminar. If you are absent a third time, that could lower your course grade. Extreme cases of absence will be grounds for failure.
