Pedals and Crankset

The pedals are the point at which the rider transmits work to the bicycle. In this section, the bottom bracket, crankset, pedals and chain wheel(s) will be considered as a system for maximizing this interaction with the minimum of energy loss. A diagram of the bottom

bracket, viewed from above, is shown opposite. This assembly is situated at the base of the triangulated frame and the central spindle carries the crankset and pedals, and the chain wheel. The spindle runs in two adjustable cup/cone bearings which are lubricated and adjusted to provide stability to the shaft while minimizing bearing friction.

The cranks are fixed to opposite ends of the spindle 180 degrees apart, and right hand crank carries the chainwheel(s) that will transfer the power to the rear sprocket.
