Loading Handle

The loading handle controls the application of the major penetration load to the sample. With the handle in the forward position, raise the sample on the table until the indenter makes contact with the sample. Continue to raise the table gently until the ring on the indenter stem almost reaches the stem of the indenter housing. At this point continue to raise the table until the pointer is approximately upright. Rotate the gauge bezel until the scale zero is in line with the zero mark. The system is then ready for the application of the major load by gently moving the Loading Handle backwards.

Push the Handle back ONLY until it starts to travel by itself. This releases the weight arm and the rate at which the major load is applied is determined by the oil filled dashpot.

Once the indenter has stopped penetrating the sample, remove the major load by pulling the loading handle forward. Read the sample hardness from the gauge scale.
