SIPRI Stockholm Int'l Peace Research Institute http://www.sipri.se An excellent source of arms and military statistics. The website includes extensive databases:

  • Facts on International Relations and Security Trends database - country profiles database
  • SIPRI data on military expenditure
  • Database on national export control systems
  • SIPRI'S online database called FIRST - allows one to call up stats on six countries at a time (no country-to-country data).

The SIPRI Yearbook is an annual publication highly descriptive in narrative. The tables are excellent, showing specifics in armament transfers, trade, etc. Although most of the data is not country-to-country, there are some tables that do show this like Table 8.1 Recipients and Suppliers.

CIA has international military stats in its World Factbook, such as military branches, military expenditures, military manpower. Downloadable.

FORECAST INTERNATIONAL a private service that provides forecasting stats on military, aerospace, and defense systems. Information on power and energy, military electronics, and weapons systems. Through purchase only.

WDI The World Bank has determined World Development Indicators, one of which is Table 5.7 on Defense Expenditures and Trade in Arms (2001 report). Recent reports also available for purchase only.
