Visit to NJ State Capital

On April 12, 2012 the entire conversation group went, by bus, on a trip to the NJ State Capitol, which was built in 1931 to house the 3 divisions of state government. The inner section of the 2nd rotunda was rebuilt after a fire, and refurbished in the 1990s.

Observed, with explanations, were the rotunda, portraits of former governors, the NJ State Seal, and a famous Boehm sculpture: Red Oak tree (state tree) with birds and flowers. This sculpture, in addition to its beauty, caught the groups's imagination with the addition of a ladybug - a nod to NJ's only female governor, Christine Whitman.

All were excited to get permission to briefly enter the lobby and press room of Gov. Christie's office. We continued to the crosswalk hall, which had a festive look displaying the flags of the 21 counties. The group then sat in the observation areas of the General Assembly chamber and the Senate chamber, hearing about their background and functions.

As we strolled through the various areas our docent described the architectural details, furniture, portraits, and gave interesting historical facts.

We returned to the University at noon. There was a very enthusiastic response from the group about the trip.
