What
does the program offer?
The Group English Conversation Program
offers international graduate students, visiting scholars and their
spouses the opportunity to practice English conversation and to learn
about American customs in a small group setting.
Many of the participants in the program are spouses of the international
graduate students and scholars. They find this program an ideal setting
for making new friends, socializing and improving their English skills.
No registration is required. The cost is $5 per semester. You can
join the Group Conversation Program at any time during the year. Just
turn up and enjoy!
When does the group program meet?
The Group English Conversation Program meets on Tuesday
and Thursday mornings, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at Murray-Dodge
Hall, which is located across from the Princeton University Art Museum.
Volunteers and students are free to participate in one or both sessions
and to join at any time throughout the academic year.
How does the program work?
The main objective of the group conversation program is to help the
participants gain confidence in their ability to be understood when
speaking English. At both sessions, participants are divided into small
groups, which are guided by a volunteer tutor. The readings and topics
for discussion are developed by the group coordinator, with input from
the volunteers and the participants.
-
Tuesday

questions and conversation. The emphasis is on pronunciation.
- Thursday Session - Emphasis is on idioms, slang
and social customs. Small group discussions include such topics
as: What advice would you give a friend who is coming to the
United States for the first time?
What are the Walking Tours?
Several group conversation tutors have organized a series of Walking
Tours of Princeton for students participating in the Group
English Conversation Program. The purpose of the tours is to better
acquaint the international students with the Princeton community and
campus and to help them practice listening and speaking skills.
