Introduction

Relating, in a rational and predictive way, the properties and reactivity of materials to their structure and composition is a major objective of modern chemistry, in general, and materials chemistry in particular. Using this as a guiding principle we are interested in designing purely organic as well as transition metal-complex based materials at the molecular level, with controlled topology and with specific photophysical, photochemical and/or electrochemical characteristics which will, in turn, be used to gain a better control and understanding of their behavior. The application of these materials to various devices (light emitting, electrochromic, photovoltaic, sensors, electrocatalysts etc.) will be subsequently pursued. An iterative approach will be used to deliberately control and optimize the device properties through directed synthetic efforts.
