White immediately offers a pawn with the hope of taking the center with e2-e4. Most games continue 2...e6 3.Nc3. From there, 3...c6 (The Slav Defense is a solid choice, although the Bishop on c8 will remain locked in by the black pawns for a long while.
The usual main line continues 3...Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e3 0-0 6.Nf3 Nbd7. There are chances for both sides but, again, it remains difficult for black to develop successfully the Bc8.
The Queen's Gambit Accepted (2...dxc4) wins a pawn, though Black is well advised not to try to retain it. White can choose between 3.e4 and 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 (with the idea of e4), or simply 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 with the idea of recapturing the c-pawn.
