Class Sparring Rules:

  • Above all, USE COMMON SENSE WHEN SPARRING! For example, a) if you choose to spar with an injury, notify your partner which techniques to avoid; b) if you have difficulty controlling distance with jabs, use them to the body rather than the face; c) if your kick is only high enough to reach the opponent's groin or knees (e.g. a spin back kick), DON'T use it sparring but develop it on your own first, and so on.

  • No striking to the groin, eyes or joints -- with or without contact -- ever. Note: aimless flailing at the face is not particularly different from striking at the eyes; aim at the top lip just below the nose or bottom center of the forehead, regardless of whether you plan to make contact.

  • No contact to the head without permission of a senior instructor AND prior agreement with your sparring partner.

  • If you execute a takedown or throw, you are responsible for controlling your opponent's fall, i.e. no spiking them head first. Conversely, if you are swept or thrown, refrain from struggling in a manner dangerous to you and your opponent, e.g. don't punch your opponent's face while his/her hands are busy controlling your fall.

  • All students wishing to spar on a regular basis must have their own sparring gear: including gloves, foot guards, and a protective cup for males (protective cups are available for females as well). Sparring gear must maintain sufficient safety standards, i.e. no tears in the plastic that can cause abrasions, or compromise gear integrity. Sparring gear can be purchased at a discount through the club, and James Karate.

  • Throws and takedowns are to be executed on the mat. Trip-style takedowns may be walked through on hardwood WITH CONTROL.

Official CMA (Tournament) Sparring Rules (1998-99):

1 - POINT FIGHTING Team consists of 5-students with subs A and B-Teams. No Women's Team, intermix with A and B Teams, if number persist maybe.

2 - FIGHTING ORDER give fighting order to the score table, no changes thereafter during that team competition, only in the case of possible injury (sure win or lose) and consent of the CMA Director.

3 - INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION all are 2-minutes (fighting time) or first 3-points, in the tie sudden death first point wins.

4 - INDIVIDUAL SCORING 5-points shutout(3-0,2-0), 3-points for victory, 0-points for loss. Disqualification or forfeit results in 3-points for the opponent, team forfeit 9-points max. TROPHY TIE BREAKER-Team Record, Overall Team Points, Team vs. Team win.

5 - LEGAL POINT AREAS attack or contact allowed only above the waist (belt line), Points (one at a time) are awarded in the area of the stomach, underarm and chest area. The back-rip area neither a point or foul 'no call situation'. Points also awarded by pulling a punch or kick (mandatory) at the head area, only exception would be swing or hook kick clearly going by the head. A-Team within 2-inches to receive a point, B-Team within 4-inches to receive a point.

Idea behind an attack to the head area is safety, techniques are pulled close enough to demonstrate to the Official that the technique is in control. 1st good technique scores, not the best of 2, in addition if an opponent intentionally fouls after scoring a point, that point will be erased.

6 - ILLEGAL POINT AREAS No contact at the head area, No attack or contact below the waist (belt line) including the kidney area, if attack or contact is made (face, knee cap, groin, sweeps, etc..) this will result in a foul. When a foul occurs 1st foul will be a warning 2nd, 3rd & 4th foul will result in a point to the opponent.

Disqualification will occur, if Head Official determines necessary. Fouls are contact to the head, low kicking techniques, excessive contact, grabbing/throwing, blind techniques (include spinning backfist, most back spin kicks, and back roundhouse). Of course an opponent may turn or lean into resulting in a foul, result is Officials determination. The official may give a personal warning to either/both competitors, like kicks up or NO retaliation after 1st foul. Again the back-rip area is neither a point or foul 'no call situation'.

7 - PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT mouth piece, cup, safety kick & punch pads are all required, more pads are optional, no equipment with leather, stitches or shoe laces are allowed, no jewelry or eye glasses are allowed, in addition toe & finger mails must be trimmed to prevent injury.

8 - RING SIZE will be a 20-foot square for competitors surrounded by 25-foot dash for Officials to control the massive student body, 3rd time running out of the ring the opponent is awarded a point & point thereafter. Your entire foot over the line is out. Yes there is a difference between running out & being pushed out of the ring, if an opponent falls for any reason discontinue attack immediately! Intentional falling will result in a warning/foul.

9 - INDIVIDUAL FORMS unlimited amount per college, 5-10 (by 1/2) points per student Adv, Inter. and Begin. levels (Adv-brown, red, black; Inter-blue, green; Beg-orange, yellow, white) please keep close to a 2-minutes maximum traditional form.

10 - ELIGIBILITY each student is to be a full-time (12 credits) undergraduate at the college of which he/she is representing, verification and signed waiver is the responsibility of the College Representative, Host College Representative & CMA Director.

11 - OFFICIALS one Neutral Head Official with 2-corner Officials to award a point majority rules 3-0 or 2-1 vote. The Head Official has the overruling call when it comes to fouls, warnings, and disqualification. Reminder of traditional martial arts courtesy to all Officials & CMA Director.
