Information for prospective PhD students
I will be starting a research group focusing on bacterial cell shape in the Department of Bioengineering at Stanford University in Fall of 2008. I expect to have openings for several PhD students.
Interested students should apply to the PhD program in the Department of Bioengineering. The deadline for 2008 admissions has passed, but application information can be found here.
Also, please send me an email indicating your interest with a copy of your CV. If you have any of the following skills and experience, please mention them in your email and give details:
- Undergraduate and/or graduate coursework in biophysics, soft condensed matter physics, mathematical and/or computational biology, bioinformatics, and systems biology
- Class projects related to biophysics, etc.
- Research experience as an undergraduate or master's student
- Experience with theory and/or computational modeling/numerical simulation of biological problems and/or complex systems
- Experimental experience in genetics, biochemistry, or microfabrication in research or laboratory classes
- Scientific programming, parallel programming, and/or familiarity with Linux systems and system administration
- Strong verbal and written English communication skills; teaching experience; leadership and teamwork experience
Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in bioengineering, physics, applied physics, biophysics, molecular biology, or related area by Fall 2008. A masters degree is a plus but not required.
For those students who have already sent your application to Stanford: thank you for your interest in our department. I am very impressed with the applications I have reviewed thus far. If you are interested in my research group, please send me an email with the information above so I can look for your application.
For current students at Stanford: I will be on campus several times between now and August. If you are a current PhD student at Stanford and would like to discuss your research interests and directions, please send me an email describing your interests, and I will let you know when I am next on campus.
I am also happy to talk to current undergraduate students at Stanford who are interested in undergraduate research experience, graduate school, or industry careers in biophysics. In your email, please indicate your class year, give a brief description of your academic and career interests, and include a copy of your CV.
