April 1997

Upcoming Events

Let’s just say this: turn over this newsletter and there you have the full Pride Week schedule. It’s quite a nice selection we have there for you and you should take advantage of it! However, there’s some information that’s not included on the schedule, especially about the Drag Ball on Friday April 18, 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. at Terrace Club. As usual we will have a contest for best drag. This time with two $$ prizes, one for best Drag Queen and the other one for best Drag King! The contest will be MCed by Jordan Roth at 2 a.m.

By the way, the theme for this year’s Pride Week is “25 Years of Pride at Princeton.” As you may know, the LGBA’s predecessor GAP, the Gay Alliance at Princeton, was founded in fall of 1972, so we’ll probably be celebrating that for a bit. Also note that the first gay dance held at Princeton rocked the seventh floor of New South in May of 1973! One other really important feature of this year’s Pride Week is the alumni conference that goes with it. It is entitled “Our Side of Paradise” and features panels with students, faculty, and alumni of the last twenty five plus years. The week will culminate in the evening’s banquet featuring Urvashi Vaid as you may have read in the invitations sent to you earlier. Incidentally the banquet will also be held on the seventh floor of New South... :)

Have you noticed those purple ribbons everywhere? Those are for Sexual Violence Awareness Month that is organized by SHARE and will feature events for the entire month of April. Check out the schedule on the web at: http://www.princeton.edu/puhs/AprilShare.htm.

Noteworthy Items

Last weekend (April 4-5) the first annual Ivy League LGBT Conference was held at Yale University. This was an unprecedented event and provided a fantastic forum for the pooling and sharing of information, strategies and resources among our organizations. Princeton sent eight [cont.]
representatives. However, most important is that now it is official that we will be hosting next year's conference! So watch out for more info on this in the near future as planning has already started. And please do not hesitate to get in touch with Tomás Amorim (tgamorim@princeton.edu) if you have any questions about this and/or would like to know more about this fabulous event.

Michael Montgomery, chair of the LGB Concerns Task Force had a personal essay entitled “The Marrying Kind: Bisexual Life, Partnered Identity” published in the Jan. 1997 “Special Issue on Bisexual Theory” of the Journal of Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Identity, located in the Firestone Library Periodicals Reading Room. Check it out!

Volunteers !!

Well, Pride Week hasn’t even begun yet and we’re already thinking about Awareness Week 1997 (October) ... and even Queer Articulations 1998 in February. If you’re interested in organizing/helping out with either event, contact Ana Berlin at aberlin@princeton.edu or Tomás Amorim at tgamorim@princeton.edu.
