Campus Organizations

The Lesbian Gay Bisexual Alliance (LGBA) is a recognized student organization dedicated to improving the campus climate for LGBT students. The LGBA sponsors educational, cultural, and social programming for the entire Princeton community, such as Awareness Week, a film festival, and Pride Week as well as a number of smaller groups and informational resources. The LGBA is governed by the Queer Core (below) and works closely with the LGB coordinator in the Office of the Dean of Student Life. (See "Resources and Services" for details.) The LGBA has an office and library in 306/307 Aaron Burr Hall with regular office hours. Call 258-4522 for more information about LGBA or any of the groups listed below.

The Men's Group (formerly H.I.M. - He's Interested in Men) is a social/support/discussion group for gay, bisexual, and questioning men and meets Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. in the Murray-Dodge West Room. The men's group is open to students, faculty, staff, and local community residents.

The Women's Group (formerly W.O.W. - Women Oriented Women) is designed to be a safe space and social/discussion group for lesbian, bisexual, and questioning women. The women's group is open to all women in the Princeton area and meets Monday nights at 7:30 p.m. either in the Women's Center at 201 Burr Hall or with the men's group in Murray-Dodge West Room.

B.I.G. (Bisexual Interest Group) is a social/support group for bisexual and questioning men and women that meets occasionally for potluck dinners, and discussions.

Queer Core functions as a steering committee for LGBA. The role of the Queer Core is to facilitate communication within the LGBT community about issues on campus and to help plan program s and activities. The Queer Core is chaired by a convener and includes LGBA officers and committee chairs. The LGB coordinator also sits with the Queer Core. The Queer Core meets weekly and its meetings are open to members of the LGBT community.

The LGB Peer Education Program provides group outreach and one-on-one support to people regarding issues of sexual orientation. The program was started in 1992 as part of a broad effort to h elp new students understand the diversity of the University community, and, more specifically, to improve the campus climate for LGBT students. The peer educators LGB and heterosexual students typically visit freshman resident adviser groups prior to Gay Jeans Day in October; they hold informative sessions about what it is like to be LGBT at Princeton. LGBA peer educators are also available for one-on-one support, and are listed in the campus directory and on the L GBA web site. The LGB peer education program is overseen by the LGB coordinator and other staff members in collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Student Life.

LGB Concerns Task Force is a working group whose role is to be responsible for identifying and recommending ways to improve the quality of life for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and other sexual minorities on campus. The Task Force does not have policy making responsibilities but works within existing administrative structures of the University. The key functions in the role of the Task Forces are providing advice as solicited to various offices that seek to reduce homophobia and to ensure a climate of safety and equality of opportunity for sexual minority members of the University community, collecting and sharing information of interest concerning lesbian/gay/bisexual issues; and suggesting new initiatives as may seem appropriate to ensure fairness, equality of opportunity, and respect for all members of our diverse community. The task force was formed in 1989. One of its recommendations, which the University has adopted, was the extension of benefits and related privileges to domestic partners of lesbian and gay employees and graduate students.

P-QUE (Princeton Queer University Employees) is an informal social/political group for Princeton LGBT faculty, staff, graduate students and their friends. It meets for occasional brown bag lunches and other social gatherings throughout the year. Please contact Rex Hatfield at rexh@phoenix.princeton.edu for more information.

The Fund for Reunion/Princeton GALA, Inc., through activities both on and off campus, is devoted to improving the quality of life for lesbian, gay and bisexual people at Princeton University and to strengthening their ties as alumni with each other and with the University. Current activities include organizing events at Alumni Reunions each spring; soliciting and donating money to the University to support gay, lesbian, and bisexual student activities; giving direct support to undergraduates, graduates, graduate students, and faculty who are engaged in research and study in gay, lesbian, and bisexual related areas. It also encourages the University to collect archival material and documents from organizations that have been influential in public policy related to gay, lesbian, and bisexual issues.
