Voz Latina: Symposium on Latinos in America

Princeton University Graduate School's Office of Academic Affairs and Diversity and the Latino Graduate Student Association (LGSA) are pleased to host a symposium on "Latinos in America." The symposium will feature prominent speakers and bring together faculty, community leaders, graduate, and undergraduate students. Tour of prints & posters from Mexico's El Taller de Grafica Popular (The Workshop of Popular Graphic Arts)

Centered around an exhibition of prints of posters from Mexico's Taller de Grafica Popular, this event seeks to provide LGSA members with an opportunity to enjoy a collection within the University's Graphic Art holdings that is of special interest to the Latino community. Please join us for wine and cheese. Julie Mellby, curator for Graphic Arts, and Fernando Acosta, librarian for Latin American Studies, will make a brief presentation of the works and will be on site to answer questions. Dinner for ten with Rodney Hero
Tuesday, November 6th 7:30pm. Mehek Indian Restaurant.
"Dinner for ten" are an opportunity for Latino graduate students to have dinner with Latino faculty members (or faculty members who research issues of pertinence to the Latino community). We schedule a reservation at one of Princeton's finest restaurants and LGSA picks up the tab. Conversations range from the "What do you do?" type of questions to "How do you survive graduate school as a student of color?" or simply, "What are your hobbies?".

Princeton Graduate School Prospective Day
Thursday, November 15.
An important goal of the Princeton Graduate School Prospective Day is to identify students of great promise who plan to enroll in graduate school in the fall of 2008 and who will help us address the disparity which exists in graduate education with women in the sciences and historically under-represented groups (which include African-Americans, Latinos and Native Americans.) Registration and a continental breakfast will start at 8am. The program begins at 9am and includes an overview from staff in the Graduate School. From 10am to 12pm, students will visit academic departments. At 12:00 noon we will host a luncheon (at the Woodrow Wilson Schultz Dining Room) with remarks from the Dean of the Graduate School, Bill Russel. From 1:30 to 2:30pm we will have a campus tour followed by a graduate student panel from 2:45 until 4pm. Our Preview Day will culminate with a reception at Prospect House from 4:30-6pm.

Demystifying Graduate School and the Application Process

In an attempt to boost the number of underrepresented minority students in U.S. graduate programs, the LGSA & BGC will host a joint grad school info session for minority undergrads. We will have panelists from across disciplines to answer questions and speak on: a) applying to grad school and the GRE; b) fellowships (NSF/JAVITS/FORD/NIH/ASA/etc.); c) grad life; d) career options. Dinner will be provided.
