Carl Bildt

Carl Bildt served as Prime Minister of Sweden from 1991 to 1994, and from 1999 to 2001 served as the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for the Balkans.  His involvement with Balkan affairs stretches back to the spring of 1995 when he succeeded Lord Owen as the E.U. Special Representative to the Former Yugoslavia and Co-Chairman of the Daton Peace Conference.
While Prime Minister of Sweden, Bildt negotiated Sweden's accession to the European Union, signing the agreement in June 1994, and undertook far reaching liberalization and structural reforms to improve the competitiveness of Sweden and modernize its old-style welfare system.  In the field of international public policy, Bildt serves on the Board of the Centre for European Reform, on the Council of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, and on the Board of the European Policy Center in Brussels. He is on the editorial board of the magazine Russia in Global Affairs in Moscow, and on the boards of Aspen Institute Italia in Rome and the Fundacion Euroamerica in Madrid.

He is the author of many published works, including Sweden: The Country that Stepped Out into the Cold (1972), A Future in Freedom (1976), A Citizen of Holland, Sweden, and Europe (1991), The Only Way (1994), and Peace Journey (1997).  He currently maintains a website on international affairs, available at www.bildt.net.
