Jason Lyall

Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Jason Lyall (Ph.D. Cornell, 2005) is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Political Science. He is also affiliated with the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies and the Institution for Social and Policy Studies (ISPS). He previously was Assistant Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School.

His research examines the dynamics of violence in civil and conventional wars. Current projects include a study of the determinants of military effectiveness in wars since 1800; examining the interplay between aid and coercion in shaping insurgent violence in Afghanistan and Iraq; and patterns of insurgent intimidation. His research has been published in the American Political Science Review, International Organization, Journal of Conflict Resolution, and World Politics.

Lyall has won several awards, including the 2007 APSA Helen Dwight Reid Prize for Best Dissertation in International Relations, Law, and Politics; the 2009 Kellogg-Notre Dame Award for Best Paper in Comparative Politics presented at the Midwest Political Science Association; and the 2007 Stanley Kelley Jr. Prize for Teaching Excellence in Princeton University's Politics Department. His research has been supported by the United States Institute for Peace and the Macarthur Foundation, among others.

He has been a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard's Olin Institute for Strategic Studies, a Visiting Fellow at the European University at St. Petersburg, Russia, and is currently a Research Fellow at the Counterinsurgency Training Center in Afghanistan (CTC-A). He has conducted field research in Russia and Afghanistan.
