Alan Ryan specialized in liberalism and its history, on theories of property, and on issues in the philosophy of the social sciences. He has written extensively on liberalism and its history, on theories of property, and on issues in the philosophy of the social sciences; among his books are Liberal Anxieties and Liberal Education (1998), John Dewey and the High Tide of American Liberalism (1995), Bertrand Russell, A Political Life (1987), Property and Political Theory (1982), The Philosophy of John Stuart Mill (1970) and The Philosophy of the Social Sciences (1970).
