Afghanistan Strategy Review Workshop
Triesenberg, Liechtenstein
7-10 May 2009
The Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination convened a workshop, “A Strategy for Afghanistan and Its Region,” May 7-10, 2009 in Triesenberg, Liechtenstein. The workshop brought together a small number of experts on Afghanistan who have been ongoing participants of LISD's larger, multi-year project on Afghanistan and the region. The workshop was funded in part by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
The workshop was held within the context of new leadership in the US, Pakistan, Iran, and the upcoming Afghanistan elections which have spurred strategy reviews and have created an opportune moment to undertake a major overhaul of the international engagement with Afghanistan and the region. While there has been increasing agreement that involvement of regional stakeholders in the formulation of a revised strategy is essential, there have been few attempts to map out an all-encompassing new regional approach. The LISD workshop brought together a small group international experts on Afghanistan to formulate suggestions for a new strategy. The workshop focused on assessing various points of the Obama administration’s Afghanistan strategy and formulating a proposal for a revised, implementable strategy.
